“I am so tired of seeing on social media, ‘Why don’t you have kids? Why don’t you have kids?’ You don’t know. You don’t know what I’m going through,” Banks said through tears.
“Anytime someone asks me if I’m going to have kids,” she said. “I’m like, one day you’re gonna ask that to the wrong girl who is really struggling and it’s gonna be hurtful to them. And I hate that. I hate it. Stop asking me!”
The crowd of women burst in applause and cheers of agreement.
“There’s a certain amount of shame that is placed on women who have perhaps chosen a career over starting a family younger. The penance for being a career woman is barrenness. You feel like you’re wearing a scarlet letter.”
We understand the difficulties that comes with trying to fill out a “certain role” while striving to become the best in your career. Because of this, we salute all career oriented women for breaking barriers and commend women such as Banks, Teigen and Union for using their platforms to share such raw and sensitive information that is, in turn, starting the conversation and helping to change how people view women all over the world.
Now signing off with the reminder: Don’t wait for the world to recognize your greatness, live it and let the world catch up to you.
